its the transmission control module (gearbox ecu) might be knackered, dunno if you can repair them or just replace it with another!

i think the code is more likely to be a symptom of the problem and not the problem. car will go into limp mode for a variety of reasons to protect the engine - i would have thought that another code would have been logged also.

did you have any symptoms before it went into limp mode?

the car broke down and was recovered by the rac this turned out ot be relay 30 .before this the car had no faults at all it was fine .the fault only occured after the relay was changed.

can't think of any reason why changing relay 30 would cause these symptoms. was 'man with machine' the rac man or someone you paid to diagnose problem?

you have done the right thing by reading the fault codes first but the code it has thrown up doesn't reveal much. are you sure that no other fault codes were logged?

did 'man with machine' try clearing the code to see if it came back?

I hope he didnt recover it by towing it?

Kiss of death for automatics (allegedly)....... ;)

rac man said it was the immobilizer but it was relay 30 as we found iut .the man with machine is a close friend so i trust his judgement we tried clearing the code down but it would not go he has since had the car for a week and called me friday to say he could not fix it that is why i am in a dilemma ,just what i needed.this was the only fault that came up !

if he's using VAGCOM he may not be able to clear some faults without the full version of software which is quite expensive.

not sure what software he is using without asking it was a snap on machine though.does any body know of a reputable garage that may be able to help in the leicester area i dont just want to take it to any body, you mention electrics and they normally have your pants down !!!!!

sorry can't help with garage in leicester.

has your mate with the snap on machine tried to find the fault manually? if it has only happened since replacing relay you have to start there by retracing your steps, look for any relays/fuses/wires that may have been disturbed.

you then need to look under the bonnet for anything obvious. look around the transmission control module and gearbox for any damage to the loom. if the logged code is a symptom, have a look at any sensors (especially lamda) for any damage.

yes we did look manually took lots of time checking all fuses ,relays and connections. it was towed on a bar by the rac for 2.5 miles under 30 mph . idid ask the rac man if he could tow it and he said that he checked with his boss and it ws fine! does any body think this could have a bearing on this fault ?

Manual states:-

Towing

When towing vehicles with an automatic gearbox, the following points must be noted in addition to the details on the previous page:

* Selector lever at "N"

* Do not have the vehicle towed faster than 30 mph (50km/h)

* Do not tow further than 30 miles (50 kilometres)

If the vehicle has to be towed long distances it must be lifted at the front

Reason: When the engine is not running, the gearbox oil pump is not working and the gearbox is not adequately lubricated for high speeds or long distances.

*With a breakdown vehicle the vehicle may only be suspended at the front.

Reason: If given a rear suspended tow, the drive shafts turn backwards. The planetary grears in the automatic gearbox then turn at such high speeds that the gearbox will be severely damaged in a short time.

it just seems strange that the only thing that happened was this relay it started straight up then this code appears and is driving me insane !!!! bloody cars

From what I just read, PO700 is a generic fault code put out by the Engine ECU to indicate that the gearbox ECU has told it something's wrong with the box. (via the CANBUS). You need to access the gearbox ECU for further information codes about the fault which may or may not be clearable via diagnostics. I suspect you need the dealers equipment for this.

i agree with seatkid there must be some other fault codes logged somewhere. dealer or autobox specialist? i'd telephone both and ask how much they charge to put on diagnostics. if its an autobox fault the main dealer will almost certainly sub the work out to your local autobox specialist.

let us know the result.

Hi thought i'd write a response if it helps. If the fault code is a problem with the gearbox I know of two garages in Leicester. One is in Littlethorpe, Leicester called 'Mechanical Workshop'(they're in the phone book), the other called 'D&K Auto Transmissions' in Whetstone, Leicester. I'm told they are the only 2 garages that do automatic gearboxes in Leicester. Both places were recommended to us for our car as being reliable. We bought our car (galaxy v6 auto 2.8) knowing it had a problem as it was stuck in limp mode but was told by the seller it 100% was NOT the gearbox. He'd had diagnostics ran on it twice and it wasn't the gearbox. As it turns out it WAS the gearbox and we're having the gearbox repaired now. We're told it is likely to cost around

gave up took the car to topgear motors [b and l gearboxs] in mountsorrel they were more than help full and very quick to diagnose it and it was the ecu for the box.i will now need to sell my body to get it fixed so it could be a while.!!!

thank you all for all your help

While you are waiting I would check the Auto Transmission relay and look for any loose connections in the direction of the gearbox and associated sensors.

Doubt that its the gearbox ECU.

Posted (edited)

Agreed. Highly unlikely to be ECU. I don't suppose they swapped it to confirm the "diagnosis"

Rather it will be wiring, relays, sensors or mechanical bits.
